The Prophecy of Armadillo is Zzerocalcare's first comic book. It is a story about how he dealt with the news that a beloved childhood friend had lost her life, co-starring a giant armadillo that embodies his conscience. Disarmingly funny, witty, and contemporary, it is now considered a landmark in the recent history of the 9th Art, having sold over 300,000 copies in Italy alone, making it the most popular title by the Italian artist-phenomenon. Structured as a series of short stories linked together to form a coherent narrative, this story was the turning point that made Zerocalcare famous for his ability to write comedy with depth, harmoniously integrating intense dramatic elements into the plot. His constant references to Italian socio-political reality do not make it difficult for readers around the world to identify with the story, since it is undoubtedly a universal story of its generation, a story about loss, coping with it, and violent coming of age.

Armadillo's Prophecy was adapted for the cinema in 2018, directed by Emanuele Scarrini, and in 2021 into an animated series on Netflix, with a slightly altered plot (Along the Dotted Line).
