There is no doubt: the cat Castrato is a reincarnation of a great eunuch from antiquity— theologian Origen, Justinian general Narses, or perhaps one of Byzantium's scheming chamberlain prime ministers? Let him decide. What interests us is the triad of Castrato. They are homoousian (of the same essence). All three characters are "castrated": Castrato in body, the elderly lady in spirit, and Lucretia in soul. These three disabilities of the modern world play their roles and masochistically nurture their misery as they depend on each other. Each character expresses their dissatisfaction, blaming, like all of us (whether admitting it or not), their ill fate. If roles reversed—Castrato whole and insatiably lustful, Lucretia "apathetic" and virtuous, the lady anti-romantic, authoritarian, perhaps youthful—the world's scene would still suffer terminally, the triad would again shipwreck amid contradictions, and Castrato would still balance ingeniously as a poetic comic. The poetry of Castrato lies in its symmetry with modern relationships: they are impossible. This "dialogue of the deaf," beyond its humor, is instructive in illustrating that today's beings live comically and tragically, and most of all alone, in their needs and unique languages." – From Yannis Varveris' introduction.
